Sexually transmitted infection. An infection transmitted predominantly through intimate skin-to-skin or sexual contact, though some also can be spread through non-sexual means such as via blood or blood products, or from mother to child during pregnancy and childbirth. More than 30 different bacteria, viruses, and parasites are known to be transmitted through sexual contact. Some can be treated and/or cured, some cannot.
